Leavitt

I had been waiting for weeks for 108 to open and Leavitt to be skiable. Malcolm, Meg, Carlos and I all camped out on the upper Walker River on Saturday night, and Malcolm Carlos and I all drove up to the trailhead the next morning. It was a bit chillier than normal so the melt was delayed.

We made quick work of the approach, even having time for an east facing bonus lap. Soon we found ourselves on the summit. We all considered dropping the famous Y-Couloir, but it looked very icy. There was one other person on the summit, who dropped in shortly after we summited. We watched nervously as he made the first turn, his skis chattering down the icy chute. After he came to a stop he shouted: “don’t drop this unless you are extremely confident, this is not for the faint of heart.” We waited on the summit for an hour and a half and a dozen or so more people showed up.

Finally, a couple dropped in, to predictably similar results as the first skier. We decided to ski down the bowl to the lookers right of the chute. The skiing was a bit icy at the top, but as we got lower down, the corn softened up perfectly. All too soon, Malcolm and I were back at the car. Carlos took a wrong turn and ended up having to ford a river, but he too joined us back at the car a few minutes later. Perhaps if I hone my skills as a skier I will come back and try to drop Y-couloir one day.
