Round Top was my northern most remaining SPS peak, and I had been wanting to visit John for a while. I was lucky to get to visit John and ski Round Top with him. We set out around 7:30am and quickly made our way to the base of the mountain. We marveled at the insane looking crescent moon couloir but opted to ski the wider bowl instead. Soon, we were on the false summit and then the real summit. We waited at the top of the snow field for nearly an hour but to no avail. The snow was simply not turning to corn. We met a chinese gentleman who had left San Jose at midnight and was headed for the summit, he stopped and talked for a while, and eventually we said our goodbyes and began to ski down.
The snow was still rock hard higher up, but softened as we got lower down. We waited for John’s partner Sammi at the car, who had biked there from Meyers. Then all three of us went to watch the pond skim at Kirkwood. The next day John and I made an attempt on Mt. Tallac, but his splitboarder friend slowed us down tremendously and we had to turn back. Oh well, another reason to go back and visit next spring!
