I had unfinished business on Virginia and Twin after bailing two weeks earlier. The rain and thunder simply became too much, so I decided to dayhike these two peaks from Virginia Lakes instead.
Fall had definitely advanced in the two weeks since I returned. The morning walk amongst the yellow aspens started out chilly, but the climb quickly warmed me up. The trail approaches the peaks circuitously — going up and down over multiple passes. Eventually though I found myself at the base of Virginia. I dropped my pack at the saddle and scampered up towards the summit.
I had heard mixed things about the ridge connecting the two peaks, but it ended up being quite fun and enjoyable. I particularly enjoyed the views out left to Whorl and Matterhorn. Soon, I was on Twin and I began heading down.
The uphill was a bit more painful on the way back, but overall I felt strong. I had been trying to move quickly all day since I forgot my headlamp, but I made it back to the car with a few hours of light to spare.
